Returning to the scene of the crime

October 20, 2009

They don't even know what's about to hit them.

That’s right friends. The prodigal son returns to relive his glory days (and nights) in Champaign-Urbana.

For those of you that need to “work” or have some other real obligations, you can follow my shenanigans on Twitter. I’ll also have a juicy write-up on Thursday or possibly Friday.

This will be my first trip to Champaign as an alum. I’m thinking of wearing a suit.

Speaking of returning to the scene…The Sporting News has Illinois men’s basketball as the No. 21 team  in their preseason poll.

From what I can gather, it seems like most preseason polls will have the Illini sitting somewhere in the No. 20-25 range (or just barely out of the Top 25).

While it’s nice to see the Illini getting some preseason recognition, I’m not convinced this team is Top 25 material yet.

I don’t want to get into some huge rant about Illinois basketball right now (there will be plenty-o-time for that later), but the losses of Chester Frazier and Trent Meacham are going to be bigger than most think.

Guard play is extremely important in college basketball (see Fighthing Illini 2005), and I’m not sure McCamey is mature enough to replace Chester’s leadership or Legion is consistent enough to become the top outside scoring threat.

Like with most things, I am probably wrong, but right now I see a team that got worse on defense, has more questions offensively, but tons of potential for this season and beyond.

OK, I’ll save the rest for later. Kyle out.
